Stay curious.
Stay grounded in evidence.

A starting point for exploring hyperbaric medicine, from professional guidance to questions still being investigated.

Read with context

The question comes
before the conclusion.

Evidence for HBOT varies by condition, treatment protocol, and study design. Device clearance, professional indications, and insurance coverage are distinct questions. An emerging use should not be presented as an established benefit.

Radiation cystitis: the RICH-ART trial

This multicenter trial found improved patient-reported urinary symptoms compared with standard care. It was not blinded, and its findings apply to the selected patients and protocol studied.

Long COVID: a prospective registry

The registry reported improvement for some patients and deterioration for others. Without a randomized control group, these results cannot establish that HBOT caused the changes.

Safe use of hyperbaric devices

The FDA emphasizes manufacturer instructions, fire prevention, staff training, patient supervision, and equipment maintenance. Use this as a starting point for safety conversations.

A practical reading guide

Four questions for
every study.

A promising result is the beginning of a conversation. The details help determine whether it is relevant to a particular patient or clinical setting.

  • 01

    Who was studied?

Look at diagnosis, severity, age, sample size, and inclusion criteria.

  • 02

    What treatment was delivered?

Check pressure, oxygen concentration, duration, number of sessions, and other care.

  • 03

    What was the comparison?

Randomization, blinding, sham treatment, and follow-up all affect interpretation.

  • 04

What changed, and what did not?

Consider meaningful patient outcomes, adverse events, uncertainty, and replication.
